The paper presents those Modern Greek words and expressions that refer to the moon and are used as moon nominations. The main focus of interest is the lexemes σελήνη and φεγγάρι, which are dominant for ‘lunar vocabulary’, together with their derivatives. Apart from the former lexemes the author takes into consideration material provided by dialectological sources and jargon dictionaries (e.g. λαμπρό ‘the moon’ (literally – ‘light’) or καντήλω ‘the moon’(literally – ‘lamp’) from the flash tongue of tinklers in Epirus) as well as nominations of different kind, that can be called “folklore” nominations (e.g. when the waxing moon is addressed as a«king», «hero» etc. in the texts of ritual greetings). To compare the Greek material to that of the other Balkan languages (within the Balkan Sprachbund) the author also brings in the “lunar” vocabulary of the Southern Slavs that keeps original root *meH-s-.The study shows that every single word used to nominate the moon (μήνας, σελήνη, φέγγος) or still nominates it (σελήνη, φεγγάρι) remains the part ofthe Modern Greek general world stock and takes part in the constructing the“lunar vocabulary”. Besides, comparative study of the basic nominationmodels indicates that despite the sustainability and “closedness” of bothmodels (the Greek and Slavic ones), the Greek model turns to be able toperform as a donor and never as a borrower.
