Summary\n
The paper discusses the etymologies of words for ‘horse riding saddle’ in different Indo-European languages. Whereas the main bulk of the Indo- European languages demonstrate a wide variety of such names, the striking uniformity of words for ‘saddle’ as well as for its constituent parts in the Slavic, Germanic and Romance languages seems anomalous. It is argued that such a peculiarity could arise only in specific historical conditions within the Migration Period.
