Summary\n
The aim of this paper is to examine the trial scenes in the Acts of the Apostles and those in Chariton’s Callirhoe against the background of Roman forensic papyri. Following Saundra C. Schwartz in dismissing any attempts to treat similarities in forensic descriptions of Chariton and Acts as indication of literary influence, it is argued that the evidence of the papyri would suggest that similarities may have originated due to the common forensic and legal background known to Luke, Chariton and their respective audiences. The article argues that the works of Clement of Alexandria must be considered not in the context of the Second Sophistic movement, but in connection with the more general tradition of ekphrasis, which was typical of the ancient literature. Sometimes Clement parodies the device of ekphrasis, which the sophists used.
