The article treats the depiction of dreams in the early Christian hagiography and the «Martyrdom of Marian and James» (second half of the IIIrd – beginning of IVth century AD) is used as an example. The author treats depiction of dreams as a special literary device and tries to determine its place in the composition and its functions, as well as the means used by the hagiographer to describe the dreams of martyrs.
