Summary\n
The author examines the scene painted on the eponymous amphora by the so- called Kynosarges amphora painter (Athens NM 14497; ca. 640 B.C.). The image could be read as the first representation of Herakles’ apotheosis. The finding spot of this monumental amphora is particularly interesting. The amphora was found in the area of Athens where the ancient written sources locate the sanctuary of Herakles and the gymnasium. Agreement in reading the painted scene as a representation of Herakles’ apotheosis may bring new arguments to the scholarly debate on the authenticity of the passages from Homer’s Odyssey (XI 602–607) and Hesiod’s Theogony (950–955) about the death and deification of Herakles.
