The article argues, that the use of the gnostic term διυλισμός (“refining”) by Clement of Alexandria in The Instructor ( Paedagogus ) resulted from Clement wishing to speak with his opponents in their language and from his perception of words with the element διυλι- beyond the heretical context as well. M. V. Lomonosov’s “Brief Guide to Rhetoric” (1748) is the most important East Slavic treatise on rhetoric. It should be analyzed from the point of view of European and Russian rhetorical traditions against the background of M. V. Lomonosov’s literary and scientific works as a unique “literary project” and literary monument. The article focuses on the lexicographical description principles that were developed for the Dictionary of M. V. Lomonosov’s rhetorical terms. This dictionary which is being created in the Research Institute for Linguistics (Russian Academy of Sciences) is a kind of “dictionary-commentary” on “Brief Guide to Rhetoric”. Lexicographical description includes a dictionary article and a vast historic commentary on the term. The aim of the commentary is to examine “Brief Guide to Rhetoric” in the broad context of Russian and European (ancient Greek, Latin and German) rhetorical traditions.
