Summary\n
One may find the term hypothesis (argumentum, a brief introduction to dramatic works) in the studies dedicated to Alexandrian scholars, ancient myths, or some aspects of the tragic genre. It seldom appears, however, as an object of a special study. The main problem in the study of hypothesis is the highlighting of fragments belonging to Aristophanes of Byzantium and Dicaearchus in later compilations. In this paper, a typology of hypothesis is put forward. Hypothesis is regarded as a special type of commentary: analytical, formal, condensed, fragmented, or historico-critical. Theoretical generalizations of Aristotle, prologue of a tragedy, rhetorical exercise are examined as possible prerequisites for the development of the genre. Hypothesis may either perform the function of a preliminary commentary to the text, or replace the text itself. Thus, the main function of hypothesis has evolved into that of a brief retelling. It has retained, however, some features of critical and theoretical approaches (principles of the organization of the narrative, aesthetic and critical nature of some observations). This makes hypothesis a kind of scientific reception of the tragic genre.
