Summary\n

Xenophon mentions in his Cyropedia (I, III, 8–11, 14; I, IV, 6) a certain Sakas, the cup-bearer of the Median king Astyages. It is believed that this personal name represents an ethnicon: Saka, Scythian. Its striking resemblance to the Akkadian word šāqû(m) ‘cup-bearer’ implies, however, that it was originally the name of the office of cup-bearer.
