The article analyzed the main concepts and terms of the Indian grammar – root and affixes and studied their influence on the European linguistics of 19 and 20 centuries. European structuralism developed under the influence of the Indian linguistic tradition, the grammar of Panini and the main principles of the linguistic description in ancient India.
