Analysis of words denoting “old” (uetus, παλαιός, παλαι-) in Greco-Roman geographic nomenclature shows the heterogeneous nature of their semantics. The majority of toponyms marked by these adjectives indicate that the denote d geographical entity retains its former place, while a new entity (usually, a city) bearing the same name has appeared elsewhere. However, these elements may also designate important details of the area that can be used as points of reference. Die Analyse der Wörter mit der Bedeuting «alt» (uetus, παλαιός, παλαι‑) in der griechisch-lateinischen geographischen Nomenklatur zeigte, daß ihre Semantik heterogen ist: in meisten der Toponyme wird mit diesen Adjektiven besagt, daß das betreffende Objekt sich an einem alten Ort befindet, wobei das Vorhandensein eines neuen Objekts (normalerweise einer Stadt) desselben Namens gemeint ist, während in der Minderheit der Toponyme bezeichnen diese Elemente wichtige Einzelheiten der Landschaft, welche als Orientierungspunkte nützlich sind.
