Summary\n
The paper concerns the problem of investigating the late antique mime as the main theatrical genre of the Roman époque of the first centuries A.C. Despite of the great popularity and broad dissemination of this genre within the Roman Empire, the absence of any literary fixation of mimes puts them outside the history of the antique literature. The evidence of the antique writers is rather scarce: only short and rare mentions are left, which can hardly present definite information about the genre. A lucky exception is given by an extensive oration “Peri; tou' mh; dei'n komw/dei'n” (XXIX K) by Aelius Aristides, the orator and sophist of the II century A.C. The analysis of this oration sheds light on some characteristics of the mime, its reception by the Roman intellectuals and its role in the later history of the antique theatre.
