Summary\n
The Karian Hekatomnid dynasty of the 4th c. BC has been the object of many studies during the last decades. The dynasty’s members were deeply involved into the local cult, and the Sanctuary of Zeus Labraundos is acknowledged the main stage for the display of power. The present paper provides a brief overview of an ongoing research. It is proposed that some important historiographical data about Karia and its political organization in the 4th c. BC, have to be partially reassessed. It is shown that the theory of local communities (κοινά) by S. Hornblower relies too much on later Hellenistic material. The Labraundian cult itself is examined, concentrating on the identity of the venerated god and the changes in ritual that took place during the reign of the Hekatomnid dynasty. Finally, a tentative reconstruction of the new cult statue of Zeus Stratios/Labraundos is proposed. The changes in the visual representative language correlate with the Hellenizing aspirations of the dynasty and are intended to underline their divine connections.
