Summary\n
The paper discusses structural changes that took place in Anglo-Saxon in VIII–XI centuries and were due to modification of the structure of speech. Those changes are contemplated with regard to the role of phrasal particles in the language, on the one hand, and to modification of semantic structure of case, on the other. As prosaic texts contain no reliable data on prosodic parameters of speech, we turn to good account the data of Anglo- Saxon poetic language on archaic syntactic structures in Anglo-Saxon. Doing so, we pay special attention to the structural role of phrasal accents in them. To show relevance of the collected data for the prose, we adduce some prosaic examples with same order of main components: Subject, Object and Verb, which could have same prosodic patterns. After discussion of the archaic state of the language the paper turns to theoretical issues related to modification of syntax throughout Anglo-Saxon period. Phrasal accents, relevant in the former period of positional syntax, were gradually losing their structural potential and the language was gradually switching to a different type of syntactic structures. Those changes were bound up with elimination of phrasal particles from the language, which implied a range of minor processes: semantic differentiation of functional realizations of phrasal particles, a ban on some functional positions of phrasal particles, development of semantically bound structures on the basis of former prosodic complexes consisting of a phrasal particle and a predicate. A most important issue of the paper is the semantics of case in Anglo-Saxon. Restructuring of syntax was a complex process which entailed further changes, one of them was modification of case semantics and development of verbal government and corresponding verbal categories, transitivity being one of them. The changes took place gradually, and during a long time grammatical meaning of cases was different from those we find in the languages of today. Semantic structure of cases preserved archaic elements, for instance accusative continued to express a range of meanings, locative and relative meanings among them.
