Summary\n
The paper proposes a reexamination of the relationship between two cognate expressions in Herodotus and Homer, μοῦνος μουνόθεν (Hdt. 1, 116) and ο όθεν οἶος (Hom. Il. 7, 39 и 226). These expressions show close resemblance not only from the point of view of semantics, but also of their syntactic structure. Contrary to the generally accepted point of view that Herodotus uses μοῦνος μουνόθεν to imitate Homer, it is shown that the two authors use the similar expressions independently of one another. Moreover, while the Homeric expression is more archaic as regards the choice of adjective, Herodotus’ variant is more archaic as regards the word order.
