Summary\n
The article presents an analysis of the semantic field of the etymological family including Latin prīvus. Reconstruction of the semantic structure for the etymological family of the Indo-European base *prii o-: *prii oā- provides a new perspective of ‘atypical correlation’ (E. Benveniste, Y. S. Stepanov) between its meanings of ‘pleasant, to love’ and ‘free’. The results of the etymological family semantic structure analysis and presence of typologically similar examples make it possible to consider the interaction between the meanings ‘close, own, personal’ (affective variant ‘dear, beloved’) and ‘particular, separate’ (→ ‘free’) as a preserved linguistic trace of the opposition ‘own vs. alien’ being formed through the interim stage ‘other/separate’.
