The paper treats the meaning of the word νηστεία in common language and in the post-Nicaean terminology. In common language, νηστεία always means fast (not eating; cf. νηστευειν ‘to eat nothing’): the usage is the same from the 5th cent. BC up to Septuagint, the New Testament, Jewish and Christian texts of 2nd and 3rd cent. – and sometimes later. However, from the 4th cent., mostly in the works of St. Athanasios, νηστεία becomes the synonym of τεσσαρακοστή, i.e. turns into a term, now singularis tantum and with a new meaning – to follow rules of Lent, when eating is not totally forbidden. Careful morphological examination of a possible possessive relationship between the peculiar river-name Argaone in the Ravenna Cosmography and the name of the gulf in which it flows, attested as Largon(e) no sooner than in 16th century sources, is employed as an excuse to investigate the hydronym’s ancient word-formation in the context of the ubiquitous and problematic suffixal conglomerate *-ā u оn- from the wider Indo-European perspective.
