The paper presents a comparative description of Ὕπνος and Ἑρμῆς, two characters of Homeric poems able to put mortals ans gods to sleep and to awake them. The author discusses the possible etymologies of the noun ὕπνος ‘sleep’ used as the name of the God of Sleep (Ὕπνος) as well as the origin of the name Hermes (Ἑρμῆς) and the name of The Hill of Hermes (Ἑρμαῖος λόφος) as a landscape term.
