Summary\n
Latin is traditionally considered to be an element of medical culture. In order to study the use of Latin the epigraphs in the physician’s writings should be included in the study’s scope as well. Moscow Medical-Surgical Academy (1798–1845) published 150 titles, 11 of them have Latin epigraphs. Most of their authors were doctors and professors of medicine, some were students. For their epigraphs they chose quotes from various sources: Holy Writ, classical authors, authors who wrote in Latin in the modern era and winged phrases. The choice of an epigraph can characterize private piety, a desire to contribute to a good reputation for the first publication. The epigraph also shows the author’s acquaintance with professional literature and Latin classics.
